In our society, from a functional point of view, consumption is not a problem but a solution to something placed prior in the chain of events, namely overproduction.
Furthermore, the persistent discussion of the irrationality which we as consumers have adopted conceals the fact that this irrationality only reflects the irrationality in the field of production … The view of production as the favourite child of modern rationality and of consumption as its bastard is in other words false. [the mode of] Labour is the problem which we conceal with our massive consumption.
